Femtosecond laser-tissue interactions
Time dispersion plays an important role in the propagation of femtosecond pulses through water. The combined e ects of time dispersion, radial di raction and the Kerr nonlinearity on the pulse propagation are analyzed and it is shown that normal time dispersion leads to signi cant temporal broadening of ultrashort pulses and that it increases the threshold power for catastrophic self-focusing.

We propose and characterize oil-in-gelatin dispersions that approximate the dispersive dielectric properties of a variety of human soft tissues over the microwave frequency range from 500 MHz to 20 GHz. Different tissues are mimicked by selection of an appropriate concentration of oil. The materials possess long-term stability and can be employed in heterogeneous configurations without change i...
متن کاملTissue mimicking materials for a multi-imaging modality prostate phantom.
Materials that simultaneously mimic soft tissue in vivo for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound (US), and computed tomography (CT) for use in a prostate phantom have been developed. Prostate and muscle mimicking materials contain water, agarose, lipid particles, protein, Cu++, EDTA, glass beads, and thimerosal (preservative). Fat was mimicked with safflower oil suffusing a random mesh ...
متن کاملMedical lasers and laser–tissue interactions
Lasers are widely used in medicine today. The applications of medical lasers rely on interdisciplinary concepts. Indeed, the fundamental mechanisms involve physics, chemistry and biology. Nevertheless, the subject is sufficiently important and interesting to be introduced to students and teachers. Here we describe the commercially available medical lasers then discuss the general principles of ...
متن کاملMultimodal Phantom of Liver Tissue
Medical imaging plays an important role in patients' care and is continuously being used in managing health and disease. To obtain the maximum benefit from this rapidly developing technology, further research is needed. Ideally, this research should be done in a patient-safe and environment-friendly manner; for example, on phantoms. The goal of this work was to develop a protocol and manufactur...
